Is There a Way to Control Guns Without Causing a Nation-Wide Problem? - Christen Roper

Gun control has always been a very serious debate since all of the bloody massacres that have happened throughout the years. Whether it was Sandy Hook, or the ever recent murder-suicide at USC Columbia a few weeks ago, guns have been used and control has been issued to pull guns away from us. But why do the people that aren’t crazy bullied because we want to have guns?

My family is a gun-toting family and I’m not afraid of saying it. My mom, dad, and brother all have concealed weapon permits. When I turn twenty one I will be getting mine. We have guns in my house. But we have them only for protection. Nothing more, nothing less. We have them just in case something happens.

This issue has always been strong for me because we shouldn’t be punishing the people who have guns for protection or just for hunting use. If we haven’t done anything, then there’s nothing you can do to make us seem like criminals. Banning guns for certain people who fail a background check or have been in prison, yes. Banning certain weapons, yes. Banning certain high capacity magazines for guns. Yes, this can all be useful. But don’t just punish everyone because of certain things that have happened.

Some of the stakeholders for this problem would be gun-toting people, like us. We want to keep them without being punished. The NRA, who has been against this for a long time. And then there’s the government and family of these shooting victims. They want these bans, they want to take guns away from all of us.

So I ask these questions:

Is there a way to control guns without causing a nation-wide problem?

Can there be a certain ban on certain weapons?

Who will be affected by this if it happens?

If guns are banned, how easy will it be for people till steal guns or find a way to get them?

What would happen if there was a gun massacre and no one was there to stop it?

Do we all have to be affected by this certain ban?

Is there a different way to control guns without completely taking them out of our hands for good?

What would happen in the future with this ban?

Is everybody for this control or against it?

Will this actually help us, or will it hurt us?

These are just some questions and I can think of many more with this problem.

Finding research is a little hard because I find more for gun control than against when I need both. But I have been able to find enough and am still looking for more.

Gun control has always been serious in my life because it’s something that will affect all of us if we aren’t careful.

Argument Analysis Self Reflection - Christen Roper

I honestly think I really outdid this essay!

I started off strong, and then I realized that I was doing it wrong. I was focusing more on my point of the argument then on the actual articles we were reading, but then I finally got it in gear and managed to make my essay work with me.

Writing argument analysis is hard, especially when you’re trying to find a good topic and good articles. That’s always hard. But I’ve always been interested in Gun Control because of my family. We all own guns, my parents and my brother have concealed weapons permits and I will get mine once I turn twenty one. I don’t want to lose the right to own a gun because of tragedies that happened. Yes every shooting was awful, but that doesn’t mean we should punish everyone that owns a gun.

Back to the essay. I honestly think I outdid it but going over the top with certain things. Now if I did well then that’s another day, but I think I did well. I struggled on certain spots but I really think I did well this time.

Or at least I hope I did well this time.

We’ll just have to see.

Is Gun Control Failing or Working? Christen Roper

When we think about tragedies like Sandy Hook or the Aurora Theater massacre, we think about “all of these happened because people were able to have guns.” They were able to bring guns in and do whatever they want with them, including killing innocent people. But is it the gun’s fault, or is it the people who decided to use the gun’s for violence? Guns are weapons, but they are there for our safety.

In the two articles I pick, they both argue against the purpose of gun control. An article by Tom Gresham states that every gun control ban they have tried has failed, and that there should be different ways to work with gun control, but not ban it. They have tried many different ways to ban gun control on assault rifles and others, but people have still gotten them and are still using them. That even without the gun control or bans, that now with good people owning guns, violence and murder has gone down.

Another article by Susan Milligan explains that we need gun control because certain cases are all caused by violence with gun control. She uses two examples where gun violence had happened because the two criminals were able to take guns. She states that we need to have certain bans, but not take guns completely
.
Gun control is a serious matter in the US right now and I am really excited to get into this topic. Both my parents and my brother have their concealed weapons permit and carry guns for their safety and soon, once I turn twenty-one I will get my own. We are a gun owning family, yet we are the nicest family you could ever meet and only have them to take care of ourselves. Banning guns will now help us at all, it will only harm us. This essay will be able to help my own argument and what I think about it.

Argumentative Analysis - Christen Roper

Initially, when I first saw the argument in the Learning Modules, I went for it because it was one of those controversial topics that I actually enjoyed. I have done many argumentative essays before but I have always enjoyed certain topics more than others that I have had to do.

The first article I chose was “Gun Control has a clear Record of Failure” by Tom Gresham. In his article, he states that certain gun bans that they have tried  have failed because of how they handle the situation and that instead of banning guns, we should try and learn the safety of guns, therefore decreasing the chances of gun violation. I agree with this article because if we learn the safety and rights of guns, then there won’t be any more accidents and the violence will go down. But we don’t have to ban the right of bearing arms all together.

In my other article, “We Need Gun Control to Stop More Than Criminals,” by Susann Milligan, it states that all of these killings are because people are allowed to have guns and are able to use them whenever they want to. She explains her reasoning with examples and what had happened with them.  She explains that having certain bans, or having background checks, would be able to prevent many murders. I also agree with this one because certain people shouldn’t have guns, and having background checks and other may help with the violence that is spreading with firearms.

Gun control has always spike my curiosity and with all the bans they have been trying to place it has always had me questioning the ideas of gun control. Both of these articles and others I have read have been very valid in my quest for a good argumentative essay that I hope I can bring to the plate.
